Osage Thorns

 


These were planted in Kansas in the 1800's to make living fences or hedge rows. They have thorns everywhere and if planted close together and cut every year they will make a living fence that will even keep in bulls. Osage also make good firewood but burns very hot so you have to be careful burning it is wood stoves. The seeds fruit is said to keep away bugs so some people keep them in bowls to keep away insects. The wood was also used for bows. The wood is very pretty but it cracks too much so it is not used in furniture. They also use the stem cut into fence poles that are said to last up to 30 years.
